Krishna Deva Raya

Krishna Deva Raya
The Vijayanagar ruler belonging to the Saluva dynasty who came to the throne in 1509. He was a very cultured man; although a Vaishnava, Krishna Deva was tolerant to-ward other faiths. He is remembered as a patron of Sanskrit and Tel-ugu literature. Krishna Deva defeated a rebellion by the Ganga ruler of Ummattur (Mysore) and also captured Udayagiri and several other forts from the ruler of Orissa (1513). He went to war against Bijapur in 1520, forcing Ismail 'Adil Shah to agree to humiliating terms. See also AMUKTAMALYADA.
